I started the diet five days ago and lost 6 1/2 pounds and then I showed a gain of 1/2 pound, today. Can that be explained? Thank you.

Sandee—I had the same experience. During the first week of weight loss it is not uncommon to lose an impressive amount of weight. Most of this weight loss is due to water loss. Then your weight loss can slow depending on your system. It's really too early to tell if you might be "insulin resistant." What is Insulin Resistance?Laura Richard explains Insulin Resistance in her book, THE SECRET TO LOW CARB SUCCESS!: Insulin resistance occurs when our cells become resistant to the effects of insulin. Insulin moves glucose from the blood into our cells for use as energy. When the cells "resist" the action of insulin, glucose remains in the blood. This can result in fatigue, chronically elevated blood glucose levels, chronic hunger and weight gain.Assuming that you are on the Atkins Diet, are you limiting your intake of carbs to 20 grams per day for the Induction Phase of your diet? Are you being careful to exclude "hidden" carbohydrates from your diet, i.e., cheeses, granular sugar substitutes, coffee, cream, maltodextrin, vinegars, spices? Are you limiting your salt, caffeine and alcohol? I am highly insulin resistant and only lost 12 pounds after a year of strict adherence to low carbohydrate intake. The key for me--I am now at a weight that is comfortable for me although my goal is 15 pounds away--was the Turbo Protein Diet. It is a balanced high protein fast that helped me to reach an important goal in my weight loss plan. I lost an impressive 11 pounds in 14 days! I "reset" my metabolism and am able to "maintain" my weight loss on a modified "Induction Plan." I was so pleased with the results that I contacted Almased directly and became a distributor for the product.Interestingly enough, one of our associates had gotten within 10 pounds of her goal on the Herbalife Low Carbohydrate Plan and had stalled. She reached her goal weight in a week on Almased!ANOTHER APPROACH: Dr. Atkins recommends what he calls the "Fat Fast Diet." It is based on 1,000 calories per day with 90% of the calories from fat. The other 100 calories consisted of 15 grams of protein and 10 grams of carbohydrate. More information on the "Fat Fast Diet" is contained on pages 272-274 of Dr. Atkins' updated NEW DIET REVOLUTION.I did both and found that I was able to achieve success with either. I was so relieved to find more than one option was available for me.Check out our HOME PAGE for information on Almased and our "Ask Dr. Atkins Tips for Success" area in the Newsstand Section for helpful information.Hope this helps. I know that there can be a happy solution for you. Hang in there!

Like every diet out there this has been the easiest yet. I know from personal experience that exercise and eating right is the best way to loose the weight. I have lost 12 lbs in 2 weeks on the atkins diet but with any diet comes the exercise there is no way around it for long term weight loss andi have struggled with mine for a long time i took off 60lbs and have kept it off for almost 2 years now all i can say is you have to want this badly enough that your willing to change everything. I know if you put your mind to it it can be done but you have to want it bad enough and not for anyone else it has to be for you if you would like some tips from me ill be glad to help E-mail me.

When you say hidden carbs, I've always thought that meant foods that we think are 0 carbs but are l or 2 or more...You listed cheese (I assume you are referring to cheeses which have no label..or the label lists more than 0), but not all cheese, right? also, you said cream...my heavy cream says 0...Do you know something I don't know, or when you say hidden, do you just mean BE CAREFUL counting....Thanks CG
