I have been on the Atkins diet for 5 days now. I'm desperate and have to lose some weight. I could stand to lose 100 pounds. I just want you to know I'm thrilled to have found this website. It really helps to know others are in the same boat. The first two days I thought I might die!!! I would get so weak at around 3pm but it is already getting better. Please give me any advice you might have. Thank you everyone!

I felt bad the second and third day. After the fourth day (and ever since then) I have felt wonderful every day! This lifestyle change is wonderful, and there are many side benefits besides losing the weight. I no longer have acid reflux, the condition of my skin is improving, I sleep better and don't need to sleep as long, and I have this wonderful natural energy every day!

The best advice I can give you is to have variety in your diet to avoid boredom and cheating. Vary your meats and meals a lot. Think outside of the box and try creating delicious meals with all the wonderful ingredients we are allowed to have! If you have a sweet tooth, try a little cream cheese mixed with heavy whipping cream and splenda, maybe a couple of strawberries on top (I would avoid this during induction though). Also, the carbolite candy bars are delicious. I have found Atkins Vanilla Ice cream at my local grocery store. Blue Bunny also has many sugar free Ice cream bars that are low in carbs.

Good luck to you!

I'm only down 18 lbs in 8 weeks. I was hoping for more, but I'm very happy to see the scale going down instead of up! It seems that the weight loss also goes in spurts. I will go a week without losing, and then all the sudden I will drop a few pounds. Does anyone else experience this?

I've also heard of some people raising their carbs above 20 for a couple of days and then bringing them back down to kick start the weight loss. Any advice on this?

I have also heard of some people keeping their carbs down to 5 or less a day. Anyone have any recommendations here?

I am staying on induction for a long time, as I have a lot of weight to lose and want it to come off as fast as possible. (Don't we all?)

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

First of all I wanted to wish everyone good luck and much success on this journey of life changes! This type of diet is the only result type diet that i've ever known. I've done this diet before and lost 78 pounds. BUT...after that time I didn't make a life change, and gained it all back plus more. I've researched more on this diet this go round and plus I'm working out 5-6 days a week for 30 minutes at a wonderful place called Curves for women. In three months I have lost 32 pounds and 29 and 3/4 inches. I feel great! I have cheated 5-6 times during this time, so I feel like I could have actually lost more. When I asked my doctor about this diet in April, he told me that this type diet was actually one of the most recommended diet right now to be on. He told me that anyone eating anything less than 50 carbs a day would lose weight. He also told me that a diet with NO carbs is not healthy. This diet has become so familiar to me that I don't count carbs anymore. I pretty much know what I can and can't have. The ladies at Curves told me that we can have a 1 hour cheat time per week if we like, to eat whatever we please. This is a good idea for those of use who are too tempted to really mess the whole diet up. I surely have more than a few times! A favorite snack of mine is frozen cool whip (only has 2 carbs/1 sugar for 2 tablespoons) in an ice cream cone. Most regular sized cones have only 3 carbs in them. If you find the kiddie ones, like I get, they have 1 carb a piece, and i'll eat 3 or 4 a day! The frozen feel of the cool whip, not to mention the wonderful taste, almost passes as an ice cream cone. Afterall, this diet is a mind game! Good Luck!

Obviously Nathan needs to make some changes in his diet that would alter that nasty attitude. Obesity is a health hazard and to be able to eat protein, ingest 3 cups of salad, and drink 8 glasses of water per day is a healthier way to eat than most Americans eat today!

I read an article some time ago quoting a research study (done, I think,in The Lancet, the British equivalent of the Journal of American Medicine) which said, substantially, that there have been NO long-term studies that show that a low-carb diet will damage your kidneys, UNLESS you have a family history of kidney disease or your kidneys are already compromised. In this case, they recommended that you check with your specialist first, and then be monitored periodically. I have a friend with chronic kidney stones whose kidney specialist advocated the diet to her, and she lost 25 lbs and kept it off... It is unfortunately that so many people believe that high protein will damage your kidneys, when in fact it is only people whose kidneys are already damaged who should limit protein.

Hey, I want to encourage everyone to keep up the good work, if you just started, welcome aboard the lose the weight train, and for the old timers like me, keep on trucking....I am a very strong advocate of low- carb, being a heavy myself for many years the only thing that has worked for me is low carb, being faithful to the life-change is the difficult part because you are not only dealing with the weight but the emotions etc...i am a emotional, compulsive eater and i have to watch it all the time, i just started up again June o5 and I have lost 18 lbs already, breathing better, losing inches, yes it is going to take time, but i am so thrilled i found this web, thanks for all your encouragement...you will hear from me again, come on let's help each other stay afloat... bye til next time...

Gloria, I'm with you. I always knew I had a very low tolerance for carbs but didn't know what to do about it. Then along came Atkins. In 6 months I lost 30 lbs. Now I know that I must keep my daily carb intake under 50 grams and accept it as a life-style. I still have some pounds to lose, but I know that this is the way for me to go. One other word of encouragement: IF one should happen to fall off the diet, the trick is to just get back on it as soon as possible. Don't get on the scale for a couple of days. I'll bet that within three or four days you will be right back on track. I would let myself have a diet-free day every once in awhile--Mexican, Italian or maybe some ice-cream--but I wouldn't let myself feel guilty. I would just get back on the regimine the next day and keep going.
