Marilyn, the coffee really shouldn't be hindering your weight loss efforts. Nor should the sugarfree gum. Just don't overdo either one. You didn't mention anything about working out. Do you? If not, you ought to. And as for the coffee, try drinking some green tea instead. Studies show that Green Tea raises your resting metabolic rate by as much as 6%. This 6% is pretty substansial considering that an E/C/A Stack (ephedrine, caffeine, aspirin) only boosts your metabolism 3%.

Good luck with your weight loss efforts!

Hi everybody! I have been on Atkins for 6 weeks now and have lost over 25 lbs. And it has not been easy. I work in a hospital (respiratory therapist) and a lot of the doctors are against this diet. My leukocytes are really high right now and this concerns me as this means I have an infection. But the weight is coming off. I have days when I am in heavy ketosis and days in light. I have 60 lbs. to go. The worst thing is the constipation. I have a bottle of magnesium sulfate handy at all times. This diet takes a lot of will power and you never not miss fruit and bread.

For Willbthin & Marilyn,
I did the Atkins diet 5 years ago, and
found it very hard to stick to. It was
hard work for me, but after a month, I
had lost 30 lbs.
This time I read "Protein Power", it
gives you all the medical reseach, and
reasons why this type of diet works,
AND tells you why it is healthy for you.
I started the first of September at
170 lbs, and a blood pressure of 160/103. After 1 week my blood pressure
was in the normal range with NO medicine. As of today the 29th, my
blood pressure this morning was 116/70,
I have lost 10 lbs(maybe not as much,
but I am very happy) I feel great, have
all my energy back, and can think better.
I found the "Protein Power" way easier
than Atkins, they allow you 30 gms of
carb on the induction. You may not loose
as fast, but you will loose, and you
will feel great; because you won't be
craving high carb foods.
"Protein Power" has a web site,
www.eatprotein.com, check it out.
Also, I was getting tired of trying to
figure out a new way to fix eggs for
breakfast myself. I bought some Atkins
Pancake Mix at the healthfood store,
and I've had them for the last couple
of mornings, with whipped cream on top.
They are more like a crepe, but I can't
tell you how wonderful it is to have a
break from eggs.
"Protein Power" also has a recipe for
a fruit smoothie you can have for
breakfast.
I would encourage you to read this book
and at the very least begin cutting your
carbs right away.
I hope that you find success and happiness.

Marilyn--Dr. Atkins has this to say about caffeine:

Excess caffeine stimulates insulin production, which will drop blood sugar levels and leave you hungry for sweets. I you're addicted to caffeine, you must give it up. The best way to do this is to segue from the high-octane stuff to decaf by gradually adding decaf to your full-force brew until you are drinking straight decaf, which you can enjoy with cream. Water-processed decaf is preferable because it was not produced using chemicals, as some decafs are. Caffeine is found not just in coffee and tea but also in chocolate and many soft drinks. Switch to decaffeinated coffee and tea, experiment with flavorful herbal teas or stick to plain, pure water. You may miss caffeine or even experience withdrawal symptoms at first, but we often see weight loss start up again as soon as patients remove caffeine and aspartame from their diet.

I really need some inspiration. I am 5'3'' and weigh 208. I want to lose 60lbs by this summer. My daughter is getting married. I am so frustrated because I have been on induction for 1 week and now weigh a lb more than when I started. I think I am eating too much protein. I am not taking supplements but I am exercising at least 3 times a week. Can anyone give me some insight I am ready to call the Weight Watchers representative and switch. I feel great on the diet I just need the scale to move to motivate. I certainly don't need to add weight. HELP !!!!!!

Judith - Don't stop Atkins....if you're working out 3 times a week, are you starting to replace fat with muscle, which weighs heavier? If you think you're eating too much protein, cut back a bit. I've been on Atkins for 4 weeks and have lost about 15 lbs. I stay at 20 grams carbs or less each day and I haven't started to exercise yet, but working on it. I have 50 lbs to lose and plan on looking great by summer. With all the other letters, the other question is...are you still drinking caffeinated beverages? This might be a trouble spot. Just keep at it. You know, he says in his book that some people just have a hard time jump starting their body...you might be one of those people. Re-read the book - especially about having trouble losing the weight. Other factors can include medications and your natural cycle, which can include days of natural weight gain through the month. Hang in there....I'm sure it will start to work.

Is caffeine free Diet Coke bad for u?
Nina       information@locarbdiner.com 1-15-2003 8:22 PM
Pam,

The problem with almost all diet sodas is the aspartame. Aspartame has lately been considered bad for you, plus it will stall your weight loss. Try to find Diet Rite which is sweetened with Splenda (suralose). The Atkins Center endorses Diet Rite over Diet Coke for this reason. Also, Crystal Lite ready-to-drink is sweetened with Splenda (but the powders are sweetened with Aspartame.)

This is for the lady chewing gum. i found out that you can not chew gum or sugarless candy. If you go to the dr atkins site they have gum and candy. Stick with it you will lose it. I have been on the intrduction for8 wks. and have lost 30pounds. Make sure your coffee is def. For breakfast i will have eggs about 3 they will be scramble with mushrooms and just a little of onions. And about 3or4 pieces of bacon. Then i will put ranch dressing on it. And for lunch i will have 2 cans of tuna with lots of mayo.with one pickle cut up in it. Then for supper i will eat fish. I lose quicker by eatinf fish and tuna. On the fish i will pour the butter on it bake it and then i will put cheese over it. And another thing is take tuna drain it and then use pork rinds. grind them up and make tuna patties fry them up. Boy are they great. Please let me know how you are doing. If you want a diet coke. drink diet rite. I have other recipes if you are interested. Good Luck.
